On the 6th of May, my sisters, friends, and I decided to go to Venice for the day! It is always spoken about so beautifully and when tickets are only £77, why not!
Again, we booked our tickets a week in advance via skyscanner. We were to depart from Gatwick at 8.25am via Monarch Airlines and return 10.30pm via Easyjet at Gatwick. The flight was not long at all, it was 1h40m each way and having never flown on Monarch Airlines, I was pleasantly surprised that the plane was clean, spacious and well kept. As soon as we got off the plane, we made our way to passport control which was fairly quick and then found the transportation stand. You can buy transport tickets from the airport to the main square via machines or on the actual desk, we decided to buy via the desk just to make sure we were buying the correct tickets. There is a choice of bus, water taxi or speedboat. The bus is the cheapest option and if I remember correctly, it costs only around 15 euros for a return ticket. We decided to take the water taxi just for the experience and it cost 30 euros there and back, in hindsight, I would've just gone with the bus! The entrance to the water taxi dock is a 10 min walk from the main area of the airport and there are signs which will clearly guide you as they are easy to understand. We waited around 30 mins to get onto the taxi (taxis come every 30 mins). It is a small, but clean boat which fits a good amount of people. It takes 1h20m to reach Piazza San Marco which came as a shock to me, however, it does not feel too long at all and you get a decent insight into other areas of Venice as the taxi stops at each "station".
As soon as we reached Piazza San Marco, we were greeted with a stunning view of the grand canal and rows of BEAUTIFUL Gondola boats. The Gondolas are absolutely stunning, however, they do cost 80 euros to ride on the day (you can book online for £27 pp) and having taken the water taxi, we weren't keen on being on water for much longer. Piazza San Marco is a massive square full of alleyways to get lost in and cute little shops on either side. We were eager to eat and decided to go to one of the first restaurants we saw (I can't remember the name) but it had seating both inside and outside. Of course, I ordered a margarita pizza and tap water. The pizza was much thinner than the ones we get in the UK, however, it was about 8 slices and I ate every last one. This being said, my "meal" cost 30 euros. 30 EUROS FOR A PIZZA. I was shocked and still don't believe the food was 30 euros worthy. After that, we went into the masses of souvenir shops. They all sell similar things, however, there is a good variety and prices are very decent. We spent our day walking around the square, talking to the locals who are very friendly, and some not so friendly! The actual heart of Piazza San Marco is breathtaking. The architecture is incredible and leaves you in awe. Unfortunately, it began to rain towards the end of the trip and we made our way back to the airport in enough time for our flight!
Overall, Venice is absolutely beautiful. It does stink, yes, but it is very scenic. It is also much more expensive than I thought it would be so be prepared. In total, I ended up spending around 70 euros for the whole day. If you have any questions, comment below :)
