When you are getting fit, you will notice your goals change regularly. However, the one goal that has remained constant for me is ABS! I have never struggled with a pot belly or anything like that and I've always been naturally flat (barr when I eat and look like I'm ready to give birth to my food baby). I have wanted abs for as long as I can remember and never used to believe the saying that abs are 80% what you eat and 20% your workout. When I first started working out two years ago, I trained abs regularly and would notice definition despite eating absolute shit. However, the results plateaued and now that I am older and wiser (not), I cannot stress the important of eating clean to get your abs. Below are my favourite exercises for toning and defining my abs.
Exercises:
1) Bicycle Crunches-1min (think about getting the opposite armpit to touch the opposite knee. Squeeze your stomach in and breathe. The lower your bring your extended leg, the more you will feel it).
2) Reach Throughs- 30sec (These BURN. Lie on your back, bend your knees and think about pushing your arms through your knees, as far as you can. You should really feel these at the top of your abs).
3) Lower Ab Crunches- 1min (Lie on your back and use your lower abs to push your legs up. DO NOT use the momentum, think about engaging the lower abs).
4) Side Plank Dips - 1 min each side (Perfect for defining your obliques. Squeeze your stomach in and keep your obliques engaged, pull them in).
5) Toe Touches - 30 secs (These are basic but they burn, again, you will feel these at the top of your abs).
6) Ab Rollouts- as much as you can (Hold onto a barbell and bending your knees, roll the barbell away from you. This will make you SHAKE and really strengthens your core).
7) Starfish crunches- 1min (These are perfect for working your entire core. Use your abs to get you up and not the momentum).
If you do these everyday, you will begin to see a difference. However, remember that food is SO important and you need to burn the fat around your abs in order for them to show. Try and eat foods that are high in protein such as salmon, eggs, cottage cheese etc.
